The Do's and Don'ts of Email Marketing

Email marketing can be one of the most efficient ways when trying to expand your business further and create a better following. Email marketing is a way to let your targeted audience know about your business and what you have to offer directly to them. This would create a sense of connection directly between you and them. Email marketing can come with many great opportunities you wouldn't expect; however, it can be tough to start. I have provided several do's and don'ts for email marketing for you to use all of its potential for it to benefit your business.

 
  1. Do set goals for yourself

It's always a great idea to set goals for yourself when you start a new task, and it allows you to stay organized and on top of everything you want to get done. Some goals you can set to remind yourself of could be attracting new subscribers, increasing social media engagement, and providing value to existing and new clients. Allowing yourself to create goals will keep your mindset focused on what you plan to achieve and eventually benefit you in the long run.


 

2. Don't buy an email list

Many businesses think buying mailing lists is an excellent solution to getting customers quickly. However, your customers and prospects know when they've opted into a mailing list. So if your business suddenly starts appearing in their inbox, that will make them mad. This can lead to bad-mouthing online, which can affect your brand reputation. And don't forget that there's no guarantee that the list you buy will be full of qualified leads. So instead of wasting your time, money, and resources on purchasing mailing lists, put that effort into building a must-have lead magnet. You'll create your list slower, but you'll have a greater chance of converting these leads into customers.

 

3. Do create an eye-catching subject line

The first thing a subscriber will see when you send an email is the subject line, which is the moment a successful campaign is made or broken. A subject line that attracts the reader's interest will lead them to open the email and continue reading whatever it is you have to say, so think about it thoroughly before you choose one and keep in mind the following tips such as; keep it short and make it straight to the point, avoid trigger words, and make sure to personalize the subject line. Having a catchy subject line can significantly impact the number of readers you will have, so be creative.

 

4. Don't forget to add a call to action

A call to action can be as simple as clicking on a link that leads to your website or filling out a subscription form for future content on your site. No matter how great, compelling, or engaging your email is, not adding an actionable link can lead to failure. After all, a single email is not enough to show your readers everything you have to offer. Including this will allow people to also further engage with your websites and possibly put you in contact with them in the future.

 

5. Do make it short and sweet with a story.

People don't want to read an entire essay when they open an email, so make sure you keep yours short, but not so short you can't get your message across. There are some tips to keep in mind when writing the body of your email, ensuring you keep your reader's attention and lead them to act, including a great hook right at the start, make your reader comfortable, personalization is critical, and engage your readers from the get-go. Try to add a bit of a story about you or your business so that the reader can understand and fully grasp what you are trying to say.

 

Email marketing is a great way to reach your readers personally, allowing them to connect with you and your business in a new and fun way. There can be a lot of mistakes made when trying to market your business through email; however, these do's, and don'ts give you the basics on reaching your audience with all the information needed to captivate them and keep them coming back for more.
